Kinga Szulz, newborn and family photographer in Glasgow

Hi, I’m Kinga

I’m a maternity, newborn and family photographer based in Glasgow. Some of my sessions take place at home, others outdoors in Glasgow or in different parts of Scotland.

If I’m going to meet your children, arrive at your home during those very early newborn days or spend a couple of hours with your family, I think it’s only fair that you know a little about me first.

My family and life in Scotland

I was born in Poland, but I have lived in Scotland for more than 20 years. Glasgow is home now, although my accent still makes it obvious that I wasn’t born here.

I live with my husband and our three children. My eldest is 14 and my youngest is 10, so they are no longer at that sweet little stage you see in our older family photographs.

There was, however, a time when I had three children under five. I remember leaving the house with bags full of nappies, spare clothes, snacks and everything else we might possibly need. I remember the noise, the tiredness, the constant interruptions and how quickly a simple plan could fall apart.

Because of that, there isn’t much that can happen during a family session that will surprise me.

I know that toddlers don’t always want to follow instructions. Siblings can start arguing over something completely ridiculous, and a child who was perfectly happy five minutes ago can suddenly decide that they have had enough.

I’m not there to judge your children or your parenting skills. I’ve been through enough family chaos of my own to know that children are simply children. If something isn’t working, we change the plan and carry on.

Why I started photographing families

When my eldest son was born, I photographed him constantly. I photographed his tiny hands, his first bath, family walks, holidays and hundreds of completely ordinary days at home.

Years later, while looking through our family albums, I noticed that I was hardly in them.

There were plenty of photographs of my children and their dad, but very few showing my own relationship with them. I had been there for all of it, but usually behind the camera.

I think this happens in many families. Mums remember to photograph birthdays, holidays, days out and everyday life, but when the children look back, the person who took most of those photographs is missing.

I can’t go back and change our old family albums, but that experience changed the way I photograph other families. I make sure that mums are properly included, not just for one photograph at the beginning of the session, but throughout our time together.

I want your children to be able to see how you held them, played with them and looked at them. I want them to see that you were part of those ordinary days too.

The photographer you will meet

Photography has been part of my life since childhood. I have spent more than ten years learning and developing my work, and I started Family Photography Glasgow in 2019.

Since then, I have photographed more than 400 families. I have worked with newborn babies who didn’t sleep, toddlers who wanted nothing to do with me, older children who felt awkward and parents who were certain they weren’t good in photographs.

None of this worries me.

You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. I’ll help you when you need direction, but I won’t spend the whole session arranging everyone and asking your children to look at the camera.

We can walk, talk, play and take breaks. Your baby can be fed. Your toddler can have a snack. Your children can take some time to get used to me.

You don’t need to prepare a perfect version of your family. I would much rather meet the real one.

A little more about me

When I’m not photographing families, I love travelling, reading and spending time outdoors. We often use our weekends to explore Scotland, although our own family days out are not always as peaceful as they look in the photographs.

I like small details, ordinary family stories and photographs that remind me of something I had almost forgotten. And despite living in Scotland for more than two decades, I still haven’t acquired a Scottish accent.

These photographs show a little of our own family life over the years. The children are much bigger now, but I’m very glad that somewhere along the way, I finally remembered to step in front of the camera too.

Now I would love to meet your family

If my way of working feels right for you, you can explore my maternity, newborn and family photography or tell me a little about the people you would like me to photograph.
