What to wear for a family photo shoot? – Photoshoot outfit ideas
Do you have a photoshoot booked this Spring? And now looking for family photo outfit ideas and inspirations? You’ve come to the right place!
Choosing the right outfit is a crucial part of your session. You want to look and feel amazing. Picking the right attire is a bit more complex than pulling a few favourites from the depths of your wardrobe.
Why? Clothes that look great in person, don’t always look as great in camera. And let’s be realistic here… Professional photo session? It’s an investment! You don’t want to leave your outfit to chance and last minute.
If you’re standing in front of your closet and your head is spinning, don’t worry. I broke the process down for you. I’m going to show you step-by-step how to choose your session outwit for a WOW effect.
So, let’s get started. I’ve created useful outfit ideas for you. Here is a quick step-by-step guide to my top tips and best advice as you choose your outfits!

Location is a key!
First plan the place of the session. What may look great for a city shot won’t match to the beach, woodland or frolicking through wildflower fields photo session.

Mum, your outfit first
Starts with your outfit and then you can build upon that clothes for your kids and partner. Women’s clothing tends to have more colours, prints and patterns. And let’s be honest, we, women are more picky about how we look. As soon as you love your outfit and feel great in your clothes you will love every photo out of the session.
My best advice is for you to wear a dress (flowy maxi dress) in your favourite colour. If you don’t like dresses, think about a jeans and tunic or skirt/top combo. Choose casual clothes but something that is slightly dresser than your everyday look.
The main goal is to find a style that’s authentic to your family but feels special at the same time!
Think about patterns and texture
Patterns and texture add depth and interest and create dimension to your photos. What do I mean by patterns and textures? – Flowery fabrics (just one piece for the whole family, for example you dress or your daughter’s dress), woollen jumpers or cardigans.

Layers instead of coats
Use layers instead of coats. Coats cover your gorgeous outfit. Extra vest or t-shirt underneath your outfit. Instead consider cardigans, gilets, jackets or scarves on top this same as texture and patterns can add interest and depth to your photographs.

Add Accessories
Accessories are the icing on the cake! Scarf, hat, belt, suspenders for your boy or headband for your girl.
Jewellery
I recommend the “less is more” rule here. Take your watch off but think about necklaces and earrings.
What to AVOID:
I say NO to:
- sunglasses (If you typically wear glasses, please wear them during your session. unless have transitional or polarized lenses. Then, consider taking them off)
- large prints and logos (please no Mini Mouses, Dinosaurs or Minecraft). Logos or text on clothing is distracting.
- neon colours (Neon colours reflect on your face, causing skin tone issues in your photos. For example, that neon green t-shirt will reflect on your face and cause your skin of face look green!)
- too tight underwear
- thin stripes distorts on printed photos and appears zig-zaggy

Shoes
Nearly the last but not the least – your shoes! Don’t wear high heels or brand you shoes. You and your loved one need to be comfortable in your footwear. During our session you are going to have fun and play with your kids. Choose shoes you are able to run and jump.
My tips here: Avoid bright white shoes, athletic sneakers or kid’s shoes with cartoon characters. If you are struggling to find shoes you love, consider having the family go barefoot for the time of the shoot.

Choose a colour palette/scheme
After you know the session location, the session style and you’ve chosen your outfit, think about colour scheme.
Choose 2-3 or 4 coordinating colours and share them around all your family members. Your outfits should be cohesive, not “matchy-matchy.”
COORDINATE, DON’T MATCH – ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PART!
Spring Colour Schemes:
- Blush and Tan (Cheerful hues)
- Cream, Beige, White
- Yellow
- Teal, Light Blue,
- Navy, Brown
Pastel colours and light fresh blues, greens and yellows are a great option for spring photo sessions.
Yellows matching perfectly gorgeous sunset light and flowers.
Soft light colour pallets -complement the colours of spring plants and fresh green grass but won’t be too overpowering.
