Lifestyle in-home newborn photography – what the heck does it mean?

How do I define lifestyle in-home newborn photography? – Natural, relaxed, authentic, truer to life! The beauty of our lives is hidden in our everyday routine. In little gestures and glazes full of love. During the session which takes place in your home I will guide you where to sit or stand in terms of light, but I won’t over-pose you and your baby. Pretty much of the time you will snaggle and kiss your precious child in your arms.

I believe the lifestyle sessions are easier and more comfortable compared with the normal shooting session at the studio. Lifestyle in-home newborn photography tells the story of the family, in its ordinary (but also extraordinary) way. So, there is no pressure or problem if the baby starts crying or is unsettled: you can feed, cuddle him/her and the photographer will keep taking those amazing photos, creating beautiful memories of daily life.

HOW TO SCHEDULE A NEWBORN SESSION? I DON’T KNOW WHEN MY BABY WILL ARRIVE

Since we are capturing natural images, there is no pressure to book your newborn photo session in the first 14 days post-delivery. Every delivery, as every family is different and something newborn and their mamas need an extra time to settle into a new life and routine. So Guys, I have to tell you that two weeks, one month or a week old baby is just as good! So… go with your gut and pick a date that works best for you, without pressure!

WHAT IF I DELIVER BEFORE DUE DATE OR … PAST MY DUE DATE?

Babies’ arrivals are difficult to predict. They like to keep us on our toes—always guessing exactly when they’ll arrive.

When we schedule your session, I use your due date as a temporary placeholder in my calendar.  Once your baby is born all you have to do is send me a message and from there, we’ll schedule a definitive session date and time suitable to your needs. I always make use of enough time in my diary to book in your photoshoot.

I tend to photograph at home shoots in the morning around 10-11am for two reasons. The light at this time of the day is the most soft, ideal for shots. Moreover, babies are usually their calmest after a good night’s sleep.

However, if mornings don’t work for you, I’m happy to find a time that suits your family.

MY BABY IS ALREADY BORN, AM I TOO LATE TO SCHEDULE A NEWBORN SESSION?

Not at all! with in -home newborn session there is no pressure to book your newborn photo session in the first 14 days post-delivery. Simply call to find out when we can meet for your photoshoot.

There is no better place for your newborn photoshoot than the comfort of your four walls.  Don’t worry about the size of the apartment/rooms or the colour of the walls. Well, I’ll surprise you here – your house doesn’t need to be big and bright! Life is not Instagram; you live in your apartment, and this is part of your family story. Story worth capturing! As soon there won’t be any clutter attracting attention, there is no place where I won’t be able to capture your love in an artistic way!

WHERE EXACTLY DO YOU TAKE PHOTOS DURING PHOTOSHOOT?

The most suitable places for your photos are the places with good light, close to the windows. As I use just natural light during my sessions. At the arrival I will ask you to show me your rooms so we could choose the best place for shooting. In majority the session takes place in the living room or bedroom.

I love using the master bedroom for sessions. The bed provides a wonderful, big space for everyone to snuggle on.

HOW TO GET my House READY FOR A PHOTOSHOOT?

  1. At least half an hour before the shoot, turn the temperature up so that your baby feels comfortable when taking pictures, just dress up with a baby vest.
  2. Feed your baby 20-30 mins before the shooting so he/she will be calm, happy, and relaxed.
  3. Don’t worry about getting the whole house prepared, as I mentioned above it’s unlikely, we’ll use every single room.

– Open your curtains. Let as much light in as possible. I’m going to use just natural daylight.

–  Hide clutter as best you can do. (Hide chargers, cables, dished out of the sink, clean bedside tables & shelves)

– Check the floor. Quick brushing will do.

– Make the bed in the bedroom and tidy up bedside tables and backs of doors

– Don’t stress, your photoshoot is going to be way easier and relaxed than you think. You need to just concentrate on your loved ones and let the photographer do the magic!

I love keeping things simple and natural. I want your newborn photo session to be this same.

HOW LONG DOES THE SESSION LAST?

A typical lifestyle newborn session takes around 2-3 hours. However, I won’t be watching my watch, we will get everything we want to capture. And if that takes a little longer that is absolutely fine.

When it comes to a newborn session, the baby is in charge. Newborns are unpredictable, there will be plenty of time to feed, change and settle. Sometimes I don’t stop snapping away and often those in-between moments make the cut as a great real-life memory of life with a newborn.

HOW TO GET YOUR HOUSE READY FOR FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT
if you wish to find out more about getting your house ready for photoshoot here you will find more detailed guide.

Choosing clothes for your photoshoot it’s an overwhelming task at first, I know it. However, the right outfit is a crucial part of your session as you want to feel amazing and look great in the photographs.

That’s why it is so important to properly prepare before the session and carefully plan the styling in which we want to perform. Don’t worry.

I broke the process down for you. I’m going to show you step-by-step how to choose your session outfit for a WOW effect.

Your Baby: Unless you have a favourite outfit that’s important to you, babies photograph best when wrapped in soft blankets or simple white/cream/beige or grey bodysuits.

Parents and siblings:

  1. Keep it simple and comfortable.
    2. Choose clothes that match your home decor.
    3. Choose 2-3 or 4 coordinating colours and share them around all your family members. Your outfits should be cohesive, not “matchy-matchy.”
    4. Patterns and texture add depth and interest and create dimension to your photos.
  2. Avoid busy patterns, cartoon characters, letters numbers, logos.

I have a wide range of outfits in my client closet so if you are struggling to find something suitable in your wardrobe let me know. I will bring something suitable for you to wear with me.

CAN YOU PHOTOGRAPH MY DOG/CAT WITH MY BABY?

Of course. I absolutely love to photograph newborns with their four-legged siblings

CAN GRANDPARENTS TAKE PART IN THE SESSION?

Yes. Always. The more the better when it comes to grandparents. There is no better family photographs than multigenerational pictures full of authentic love.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING in-home newborn photography SESSION?

A typical session will start off by spending a few minutes together just chatting. I’ll ask you a bunch of questions, while I prep my cameras.

“When did the baby last eat? How was your delivery? Pleas remind me again if you have any special items/props  you wish to use during our session.” Etc…

Then, I ask you to take me around your place. This is when I’m looking at the light in your home and coming up with a plan for the photoshoot! Lighting is key to great photos. I always search for the best-lit room.

I usually capture babies alone right after their feed.  Then I bounce around taking turns asking mom, dad, and siblings to hold the baby. Believe me, it’s truly as simple as that. I really do shoot all extraordinary ordinary moments – diaper changes, nursing (if you feel comfortable with it), your laughs, baby yawns, tiny feet, and toes… all that love.

the beauty of in-home newborn photography

You don’t leave you your cosy nest you are all relishing. Babies are happier in familiar surroundings, and they can nap easier and feed when the mood takes them. My in-home newborn photography sessions are never done on a strict timetable. As newborns are a law unto themselves, as they should be. Lifestyle sessions are all about natural accruing moments, so in between moments: feeding, changing nappies are the true essence of the newborn in-home photoshoot.
