Professional Maternity Photos in Glasgow

What to Expect From the Whole Experience
Pregnant woman smiling back at her husband while walking through a summer meadow path during a relaxed maternity photography session.

Professional maternity photography is not only about the photographs you receive at the end.

For me, the whole experience starts much earlier, from the first message.

Most women who contact me already have a few worries.

Will I look good? What if I do not know how to pose? Which location should we choose? What if the weather changes? What should I wear?

And because this is Scotland, the weather question usually comes up quite quickly.

My job is not just to turn up with a camera. It is to make the whole process feel easier from the beginning.

The planning starts with you, not with the location

The first thing I usually ask is how many weeks pregnant you are and how you are feeling.

That comes before choosing a location.

We talk about when you would ideally like to have your session, whether weekdays or weekends work better for you, and whether you already have a particular date in mind.

From there, we work out roughly when the session should happen.

The exact time is usually decided much closer to the date, because I prefer to see what the weather is actually doing rather than fixing everything too far in advance.

Once we know the timing, I ask you to send me a few photographs for inspiration.

They can be my photographs or something you found online.

I want to see what kind of feeling you are drawn to, what sort of background you like, whether you prefer something more open and natural, more intimate, more dramatic or very simple.

Then I can suggest a few locations that would work.

If it is somewhere I have not photographed before, I will usually go and check it first.

But the location also has to work for you physically.

I take into account how far you can comfortably walk, how much energy you have, how you are feeling at that stage of pregnancy and how much moving around feels realistic.

There is no point choosing a beautiful place if getting there is going to leave you exhausted before we even start.

Choosing a location is not only about what looks pretty

A beautiful location is important, but it is not the only thing I think about.

I also look at access, privacy, light, distance and how much walking is involved.

If you love the idea of mountains but you are exhausted after ten minutes of walking, we do not need to drag you halfway across Scotland for photographs.

We can choose somewhere beautiful with easy access.

Or we can photograph part of the session at home and go outside somewhere close by.

The location should work for you, not just for the photographs.

I have been pregnant three times myself, so I know that what sounds easy on paper can feel very different when you are actually carrying a baby.

Clothes are part of the planning too

Once we know the location and the overall feel of the session, we can look at what you are going to wear.

You can send me photos of what you already have and I can help with colours, layers and what will work best with the location.

Sometimes that means adjusting colours.

Sometimes changing shoes.

Sometimes simply adding another layer underneath because I know you will freeze otherwise.

You can also use dresses from my client wardrobe.

If you want, you can come to me before the session, try a few options, take the dress home and arrive at the session already dressed and ready.

That way, you are not trying to make all those decisions on the day itself.

I also have some warmer pieces, including winter coats, available if they suit the look we are planning.

You do not have to wear a maternity dress just because you are having professional pregnancy photographs.

The point is not to turn you into somebody else.

You do not need to know how to pose

This is probably the thing women worry about most.

And honestly, you do not need to know.

I do not expect anyone to arrive knowing what to do with their hands or which side of their face they prefer.

I will guide you.

Sometimes I will tell you exactly where to stand.

Sometimes where to place your hands.

Sometimes I will ask you to turn slightly or move closer to your partner.

But I do not want you thinking about posing for the whole session.

One thing I often ask mums to do is stop thinking about me completely and focus on the baby.

Put your hands on your bump.

Feel where the baby is.

Take a moment.

It sounds very simple, but you can see the difference immediately.

Your face relaxes.

Your body relaxes.

You stop wondering what you look like.

And that is usually when the photograph starts to feel real.

What happens if my partner is uncomfortable in front of the camera?

That is very normal.

A lot of partners arrive thinking the session is really for the mum and they are just there because they have been asked to come.

I do not make them perform either.

We talk.

We joke.

You walk together.

You hold each other.

Sometimes I ask questions about how you met, your plans for the baby or whether you have chosen a name yet.

The idea is to get you interacting with each other rather than staring at me waiting for the next instruction.

Professional does not need to mean formal.

What if children are joining us?

Then the session starts to revolve around them a little more.

And that is intentional.

If the children are happy, the parents usually relax too.

I do not expect young children to behave perfectly for an hour or to cooperate with every photograph I have in mind.

They can move.

They can take breaks.

They can come into photographs and then go off and play again.

While they are busy, I can photograph you alone or with your partner.

Then we bring them back when they are ready.

Trying to force children through a maternity session usually creates more stress for everyone.

I would rather work around them.

Professional maternity photography also means knowing how to use the light

A location can be beautiful and still be difficult to photograph at the wrong time.

I usually avoid harsh full sun if I can.

I prefer softer light.

That might mean an overcast day, shade, softer evening light or sunset.

Cloudy weather is not bad weather for photographs.

In fact, it can be much more flattering than strong midday sun.

This is one of the reasons I do not choose the time of a session only according to what is most convenient on paper.

Light matters.

But so does the family.

If children are involved, their routine matters too.

There is no point choosing the most beautiful possible sunset if everybody is exhausted before we even begin.

I am flexible with weather, time and sometimes even the date

I do not believe in forcing a session just because a particular date was written in the diary weeks ago.

If the weather is awful, we change it.

If the forecast changes, sometimes we move the time.

If somebody is unwell, I would rather reschedule than have a family turn up feeling miserable.

I want you to enjoy the session.

That matters more to me than sticking rigidly to an original plan.

Especially during pregnancy, flexibility is important.

What happens after the maternity session?

After the session, I go through the photographs and prepare a gallery of the strongest images for you to view.

I usually take a lot of photographs during a maternity session because I want to give you real choice.

You are not expected to decide before the session that you must buy a larger collection.

My minimum collection is the Pause package, which includes 10 edited photographs.

After seeing your gallery, you can decide whether you want to stay with that collection or upgrade.

You choose the photographs that matter most to you.

In my Full Story collection, you also receive a larger set of edited photographs together with the unedited gallery.

I like giving families that choice after they have actually seen their images rather than asking them to guess beforehand how many they are going to want.

What makes professional maternity photos different from taking a few nice pictures yourself?

It is not simply the camera.

A professional maternity session gives you the chance to actually be in the photographs instead of organising them.

You do not have to think about where the light is coming from.

Whether the location is too busy. What angle is flattering. Whether your partner knows what to do. Whether your child is looking at the camera. Whether the weather is going to work.

That is what I am thinking about. You get to focus on your family. For me, that is probably the biggest difference.

I want the session itself to be something you enjoy

Of course I want you to love your photographs.

But I also care about how you felt while we were making them.

The feedback I love hearing most is not only that somebody likes the gallery.

It is when they tell me the session felt like going for a walk with an old friend rather than spending an hour with a stranger taking their picture.

That is what I am aiming for.

Relaxed enough that you stop thinking about the camera.

Directed enough that you never feel lost.

Professional enough that all the details are taken care of for you.

Professional maternity photography in Glasgow should still feel like you

You do not need to become a different version of yourself for a maternity photoshoot.

You do not need to wear a dramatic dress if that is not you.

You do not need to travel to the Highlands if walking around your local area feels better.

You do not need to know how to pose.

And you do not need to have everything planned before you contact me.

We can work all of that out together.

The professional part is not about making the session formal.

It is about making sure you feel looked after from the first message to the final gallery.

Outdoor Maternity Photoshoot Ideas and In-home Maternity Photo Shoot

The location you choose for your maternity photography session can greatly impact the overall look and feel of your photographs. Whether you prefer an outdoor setting or at your home , there are a few key factors to consider when making your decision.

These locations offer natural beauty, soft lighting, and a sense of serenity that can enhance the ethereal nature of your pregnancy photos. Keep in mind, however, that outdoor shoots are weather-dependent, so be prepared with a backup plan in case of inclement weather.

This can be especially beneficial if you want a more stylised or artistic look for your maternity photos. Additionally, at home maternity photo session provides privacy and comfort, allowing you to fully relax and express yourself during the session.
